Advanced Junction Design

Intersection or Junction design (depending on what side of the Atlantic you are on) can be tricky. In 2009 Autodesk introduced the junction design wizard into Civil 3D 2010. This aimed to create a junction in seconds... which it did but for a very 'green field' site. If junctions were that easy to design there would be no need for civil engineers to have any input and you wouldn't be here reading this!

Our Junction design course uses an approach built on years of using Civil 3D. We will take elements from the junction wizard and combine these with 'manual' design techniques to build a design that is easy to understand and edit if need be. This course covers three junction design examples:
  1. Relatively simple T-junction that will introduce the main principles of our design method that serve as a basis for the other two
  2. T-junction tying into a superelevated roadway with varying cross section type. There is also a second junction very close to the first so we will be covering how to tie the two neatly together.
  3. The final example outlines a workflow for upgrading an existing junction. The incoming and outgoing lanes of the junction are to be widened to accommodate HGV movements while maintaining the existing main road crossfall along the widened portion.
This course assumes you are familiar with creating horizontal & vertical geometry for roads in Civil 3D and are comfortable with creating corridors. It is not intended for beginners with either Civil 3D or Junction design.
