Windfarm Site Design

This course is a guide for designing wind farm infrastructure using Civil 3D. It is aimed at those undertaking detailed design. If you are looking at preliminary level design for planning then this course will be too detailed. (That said if you followed these steps and the job does get planning then you have the bulk of the modelling work completed already). Note: I have written a number of posts on this blog detailing parts of the workflow outlined in the course - they can be found at http://civilintentions.blogspot.ie/search/label/wind%20farm

The example used here is for designing a windfarm on upland ground covered in peat. Special consideration will be given to how we first create our sub surface strata (peat, competent material, rock etc) from survey data and model these in Civil 3D. (included is a workflow for modelling a peat layer where you have limited SI). Next we will design the access roads using the conditional subassemblies to automate decisions for the road embankment slopes depending on whether we are in cut or fill relative to the rock/competent layer.

The turbine hardstand areas can be tricky to design from a Civil 3D point of view given their sometimes awkward shape. After many iterations on a number of projects I believe we have come up with the simplest way of doing this using the current set of tools in Civil 3D. The result is a model that is easy to edit and extract information from(volumes, setting out data).

Finally we will look at calculating volumes. Given that we have a number sub surface strata to take into account it can complicate things when calculating our volumes. Again we have condensed weeks of trial and error on different projects into an easy to understand workflow in this course.

You do need to have prior experience with Civil 3D (you should at least be able to create a corridor and sections, comfortably) to take this course, and also an understanding of wind farm layout and infrastructure is required.
